📝 Assessment Criteria for Compositions

When we evaluate your writing, we will use the following criteria to guide our assessment. Make sure to keep these in mind as you plan, write, and revise your work!


1. Content / Task Achievement

  • Did you answer the question clearly and completely?

  • Have you done what was asked in the task?

  • Your writing should fully address the topic and meet all the requirements.


2. Organization

  • Is your writing well structured and easy to follow? Is it in the format requiered?

  • Are your ideas presented in a logical order?

  • Your composition should be divided into clear paragraphs, each focused on a single idea. Try to include:

    • A topic sentence

    • Supporting details

    • A concluding sentence


3. Vocabulary

  • Are you using a varied and appropriate range of words?

  • Does your vocabulary help express your ideas clearly and precisely?


4. Language Use

  • Is your grammar accurate and consistent?

  • Do your sentences show correct subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and word order?

  • Make sure your sentence structure supports clear communication.


5. Mechanics

  • Are your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization correct?

  • Mechanics include:

    • Capitalization (e.g., starting sentences with capital letters, using capitals for proper nouns)

    • Punctuation (e.g., correct use of commas, periods, and question marks)

    • Spelling (e.g., avoiding mistakes that confuse the reader)


Use this checklist to review your writing before submitting it. Focusing on each of these areas will help you become a more effective and confident writer.👇

  • Did I avoid repeating the same words too much?


4. Grammar (Language Use)

  • Are my sentences grammatically correct?

  • Did I use the right verb tenses?

  • Do my subjects and verbs agree?


5. Mechanics

  • Did I start sentences with a capital letter?

  • Did I use punctuation correctly (.,!?)?

  • Did I check my spelling?


🟡 Tip: After checking everything, read your writing one more time. Reading it aloud can help you find small mistakes!
